SHLENE ELI, LPC OFFERS A FULL RANGE OF COUNSELING SERVICES IN THE GREATER TYLER AREA

A New Day Counseling Center provides a variety of counseling and therapy options from an experienced and knowledgeable licensed professional counselor in Whitehouse, TX. Shlene Eli, MA, LPC specializes in Individual counseling with children, teens, and adults. The most common services provided are for coping with stress, anxiety, depression, and learning disabilities, but often, these symptoms stem from underlying adverse life experiences and may need to be addressed in order to move forward.

Shlene offers services for most issues. Counseling is especially helpful for anyone needing medication related to mood or behavioral symptoms that accompany depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, ADHD, and many other diagnoses. Often the most effective therapy includes both medication and counseling services. Medications may help with many troublesome symptoms of these illnesses while counseling teaches coping skills that can lead to a healthier and more fulfilling lifestyle. Sometimes medication can even be decreased or discontinued once adequate coping skills are learned.

Therapy options include Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Brief Counseling (SFBC), Play Therapy, & Assessment.

  • WHAT IS EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing is an evidence-based 8-phase integrative psychotherapy that combines aspects of all the major psychotherapeutic orientations using bilateral eye movements, taps or tones, replicating brain activity during REM sleep. Based on an information processing model, EMDR makes associations between cognitive and automatic/emotion memory networks stored in the brain to promote healing. The goal of EMDR therapy is for the client to be able to make peace with the past, be empowered in the present, and able to make choices for the future.

  • WHAT IS CBT?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is an evidence-based, goal-oriented psychotherapy that takes a hands-on, practical approach to problem-solving. It aims to help people become aware of when they make negative interpretations, and of behavioral patterns which reinforce the distorted thinking. Its goal is to change patterns of thinking or behavior that are behind people’s difficulties, and so change the way they feel. CBT therapists emphasize what is going on in the person’s current life, rather than what has led up to their difficulties. The focus is on moving forward in time to develop more effective ways of coping with life.

  • WHAT IS SFBC?

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy is an evidenced based therapeutic intervention used to treat people of all ages and a variety of issues, including child behavioral problems, family dysfunction, and relationship problems. It focuses on a person’s present and future circumstances and goals rather than past experiences. SFBC places far more importance on discussing solutions than problems.

  • WHAT IS PLAY THERAPY?

Play Therapy is a method of psychotherapy in which play is used as means of helping children express or communicate their feelings. Aspects of Play Therapy using art, sand, books, or toys are often incorporated into EMDR, CBT, or SFBC to provide therapy to children at their appropriate developmental level.
  • WHAT IS ASSESSMENT?

Psycho-educational Assessments are provided to determine a student’s needs. The assessment uses objective, standardized tests to determine the student’s cognitive ability (i.e., intelligence), to evaluate their information processing skills (i.e., memory, attention, processing speed, executive function, etc.) and academic skills. Results use the national average for that specific test to compare the student to those in the same age range to see if they are above or below the expected range, and considered clinically significant. A comprehensive report is written and reviewed with the client (i.e., parent or adult student) so they may present it to their educational setting where accommodations (i.e., extra time on tests, access to educational help, etc.) may be provided.
